Black & White Coffee Roasters: Blends and Experimental Coffee

Black & White Coffee Roasters: Blends and Experimental Coffee

Black & White Coffee Roasters offers more than one way into specialty coffee. The North Carolina roaster is associated with experimental releases, but its recurring blends also provide familiar starting points. Understanding that breadth helps you choose a coffee you will enjoy, whether you want comfort or a more adventurous tasting.

Competition experience, everyday coffee

Kyle Ramage and Lem Butler, both US Barista Champions, founded Black & White in 2017. The company describes wanting to make interesting coffees encountered at competition more accessible. It roasts in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Competition experience provides context, not a requirement for professional equipment. Your first decision is still the drink you want to make and the flavour direction you prefer.

Three blends, three starting points

In the roaster’s own descriptions, The Classic leans towards milk chocolate and caramel, The Natural towards red fruit, and The Original towards Ethiopian citrus and florals. These recurring names help organise the range, while components and releases can change.

If you want a reassuring daily cup, The Classic’s description is a useful first comparison. The Natural offers a fruitier direction, while The Original invites a brighter aromatic exploration. Read the exact listing for roast and brewing guidance rather than assuming all three need the same settings.

Experimental processing deserves a careful read

A fruity note does not prove that fruit was added. Equally, some releases explicitly involve co-fermentation with fruit or other inputs. Black & White’s Sebastian Ramirez Peach release is one published example of a process involving peaches. The process account, rather than the tasting name alone, establishes that distinction.

If you enjoy conventional washed coffees, you can explore the range without choosing the most fermentation-forward option. If you want an adventurous cup, read our co-fermentation guide and check the specific treatment before buying.

Choose a useful contrast

A familiar blend alongside a clearly different single origin can make a worthwhile home tasting. Keep your brewer and water consistent, adjust each coffee as needed and notice texture and finish as the cups cool. A more intense aroma is not automatically a better coffee for your daily routine.

Our Black & White collection shows the current selection. Check availability, size and roast information on the product itself; examples from the roaster’s catalogue are not a guarantee of current stock in Canada.
