Square Mile Coffee Roasters was founded in London, United Kingdom, in 2008 by James Hoffmann and Anette Moldvaer. Both had already achieved world titles: Hoffmann won the 2007 World Barista Championship, while Moldvaer became the 2007 World Cup Tasters Champion. Their subsequent work as authors and educators has helped explain specialty coffee to a much wider audience.

The roastery’s selection follows seasonal harvests and the work of individual producers. Filter coffees highlight the character of particular origins, while espresso profiles balance that character with sweetness and texture.

Red Brick, its signature espresso, illustrates the approach particularly well. The coffees in the blend change with the seasons while the intended drinking experience remains consistent, with an emphasis on chocolate and caramel notes. Square Mile brings together sensory expertise, practical brewing knowledge and a clear distinction between the needs of filter coffee and espresso.
