Zab Coffee Roasters - Guatemala Lemus Family
Tasting notes: Hazelnut, dark chocolate, butterscotch
The Lemus family’s coffee story began in 1958 with Juan Raul Lemus’s grandfather, followed by his father Baudelio two decades later. Juan Raul and his siblings now manage 13 hectares across four plots in Mataquescuintla, Jalapa. Their processing infrastructure serves both their own harvests and neighbouring growers. Members of Café Colis Resistencia, the family advocates for Xinca communities affected by mining and works to create better routes to market for local coffee.
Zab sources this washed Pache San Ramon from El Durazno through Semilla. Grown at 1,900 metres, it combines hazelnut, dark chocolate and butterscotch with a creamy texture. Filter brewing highlights its comforting chocolate-and-nut character, while espresso pairs naturally with milk. Zab includes the coffee in its Back to Origin initiative, through which the roaster reports returning $0.50 per bag sold to the producer; that commitment belongs to Zab’s programme.
