Coffee information
If you’ve ever fallen in love with Ethiopian coffee, chances are Yirgacheffe had something to do with it. Banko Chelchele is one of those places that reminds us why. Nearly 400 local farmers grow coffee at some of the highest elevations in the world and deliver their harvest to a brand new washing station, built just a few years ago.
At the station, cherries are carefully depulped, fermented for 48 hours, rinsed clean in fresh water, and laid out to dry on raised beds. It’s a simple but precise process that brings out sparkling fruit and floral notes, layered with a classic black tea structure. This washed style is a beautiful contrast to the more perfumed naturals from the same area, offering a cup that’s crisp, clean, and full of character.
What makes this even more exciting is the future. The Banko Chelchele washing station is owned by a team that’s invested in its farmers and staff (providing meals, lodging, and resources) while also looking ahead to explore new processing methods. For now, though, we’re just thrilled to enjoy this washed lot, which showcases everything we love about Ethiopia’s coffee heritage.
